Product Description To call it "long-awaited" or "eagerly anticipated" would be the understatement of the year - as hip-hop's most daring pioneers the Roots release their 9th studio album (and third for Def Jam Recordings) on June 22nd, HOW I GOT OVER. The album, which takes its name from Clara Ward's gospel classic (made popular by Mahalia Jackson), is the Roots' first new release since joining Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for a full time gig as the show's house band. Grammy Award winners the Roots characterize the songs on HOW I GOT OVER as "depicting the everyman's search for hope in this dispiriting post-hope zeitgeist". The lead single from the Roots new set will be "Dear God 2.0." The track re-imagines the Monsters Of Folk song "Dear God" and features MOF members Yim Yames from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes and M. Ward. HOW I GOT OVER also includes two appearances from Grammy-winning soul man John Legend: "Doin' It Again" a re-working of his track "Again," and "The Fire," an original song written for the Roots' 2010 Olympic concert performance. The Roots and Legend have developed a strong musical bond, as the group has produced John's entire upcoming release Wake Up, which shares the socially conscious themes of the "How I Got Over" set and is comprised of late sixties/early seventies covers. Other guests on HIGO include Joanna Newsom on "Right On," Phonte Coleman (Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange), Blu (Blu & Exile), Peedi Peedi , Mercedes Martinez, Icelandic alt-pop singer Patty Crash, newcomer Sugar Tongue Slim as well as long time Roots' Crew members Dice Raw, Truck North and P.O.R.N.

One of their best September 6, 2010 sato b. (Bay Area, CA) Every time I read a review of a new Roots CD/Album there is always someone complaining. Too dark, too negative was what was said about the last two releases. Now its too poppy and not hip hop. Please make up your mind! What I like and respect about the Roots is their willingness to explore and try new things. When they gave up their more jazzy flavorings everyone wrote them off but they came up with something original. It wasn't easy to listen to and it was challenging....but what amazing stuff.
Getting to this CD. Not as challenging as the last couple but a more positive cd and a marriage of their various directions. Black Thought lyricism continues to be incredible. Every track is great except one(I agree with others that the last track felt like it came from a different cd--doesn't work!) and it pretty much holds together as a complete work (except that last tune) and that makes it significantly stronger than the last few releases which were less coherent. I'm far from a John Legend fan and they made him sound good (which I didn't think was possible) and introduced me to a bunch of performers I wasn't familiar. Questlove's drumming and musicianship continues to amaze and tariq's "singing" was a shock and very impressive.
On the whole one of my favorite cd's of the year.
Best days behind them ... ? September 2, 2010 M. Duffy 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Took a chance based on the ratings, but continues the decline since the tipping point. No standout tunes, and poor production choices keep the "almost" tunes from breaking through. Do they need a stronger producer (Scott Storch, where are you)? Big supporter and will see them live here in Philly, but not worth taking a chance on the new tunes until something pretty dramatic changes. A shame, but happens to 99% of bands, I guess...
This album August 26, 2010 michael (columbia md) I've had a lot of my favorite rappers come out this year. I'm not a big roots fan but I know good music and I would say this is one of the best albums to come out this year it's short but great
Consistent quality August 22, 2010 GB Just more good, quality music from The Roots crew. One of the top 10 hip hop albums of 2010, How I Got Over is the type of quality you music one comes to expect from The Roots with their 9th studio release. The Roots have a way of always being able to incorporate new sounds and influences while creating music that has the distinctive Roots sound. This album will please long time fans and those just learning of the band through their gig on Jimmy Fallon.
A great return to form August 18, 2010 Mantorok Since Game Theory I was worried that The Roots may be on a bit of a slippery slope, as although GT was still a great album I didn't feel it lived up the previous albums, I too enjoyed Rising Down but that only had glimpses of genius, there were a few suspect tracks. How I Got Over changes all that, this is top quality production and Tariq shines as usual, the album is consistent throughout and I haven't once skipped a track, this could be considered another classic, and the only reason for not giving a 5 is that it felt a little too short, it's the sort of album you don't want to end.
